Dream, Decoration and the Wider World
Beyond France
How painters from Brussels to London reworked the new ideas.
Painters across Europe took the ideas worked out in Paris and bent them to their own cities and concerns. New exhibiting groups in Brussels, Munich and Vienna gave them a stage. The label for the whole movement came later, from Roger Fry's 1910 exhibition in London.
- Belgium and Norway: masks, silence and dread in Ensor, Khnopff and Munch.
- Vienna: the Secession, and Klimt's gold and ornament.
- Switzerland, Italy and Britain: rhythmic figures, divisionist light and the London music hall.
- Secession
- A group of artists who broke away from an official academy or exhibition society to show new work on their own terms.
