Posters at Trouville
1906
Oil on canvas, 65.1 × 81.3 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington
Strollers in dark and white clothes pass striped beach tents and a long wall of advertising boards on the seafront. It is his only known painting of this spot.
- He and Raoul Dufy painted side by side at Trouville in summer 1906, both looking at one poster hoarding.
- Look at the posters: lettering shrinks to a few marks inside flat blocks of yellow, blue and red.
- Paint is laid in flat, even areas rather than heavy, textured strokes.
- Pure yellow, blue and red fill a calm, orderly street scene. The color is bold, but the drawing and space stay steady and easy to read.
- Sold through John Rewald to the Whitneys in 1971, it entered the gallery with their 1998 gift.
