André Derain
Pont de Charing Cross
c. 1906
Oil on canvas, 81 × 100 cm. Musée d'Orsay, Paris (French State; assigned to the Orsay in 1986)
A London embankment curves past pink trees toward the bridge, under a yellow sky with towers rising on the far bank.
- He painted this bridge more than once; another version, dated 1906, is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
- Look at the river: a yellow surface broken by flecks of blue and green, not gray water.
- Flat, curving bands of green and pink make the road and pavement, edged in dark blue.
- Warm yellows and pinks are played against cool blues and greens across the canvas. These contrasts, more than London's own light, set the mood and hold the design together.
- The dealer Ambroise Vollard once owned it; it was given to the French state in 1973.
