Nerves Exposed

Gerstl, Schiele and Schoenberg in Vienna, 1905–1918

In Vienna the break with tradition came through line, the body and the self-portrait more than through color. Younger painters, working in the long shadow of Klimt (see the Post-Impressionism section), turned portraits into studies of nerves and desire. The story here ends in 1918, the year the war ended and influenza swept the city.

  • Richard Gerstl's short, isolated career
  • Egon Schiele's self-portraits, double portraits and figure groups, 1912–1918
  • A composer who painted, and a portrait print
