Seeing Light
Willem Claesz Heda
Still Life with Oysters, a Silver Tazza, and Glassware
1635
Oil on wood, 49.8 × 80.6 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
Glass, silver and oyster shell each catch the light in their own way.
- The Met notes Heda worked "almost exclusively in shades of gray".
- Small, sharp highlights on the tall glass and the overturned silver cup read as hard, polished surfaces; the oysters' wet sheen is broader and softer.
