Describing Color

Words and numbers for telling one color from another

Everyday color names are too loose for a painter. This module sets out the properties every color has, the wheel painters use to arrange hues, and a system that locates each color by number. Later modules use these terms throughout.

  • Three properties of any color, and what white, gray or black do to it
  • Primaries, secondaries and tertiaries on the painter's wheel
  • A measured color space built around a gray axis

Achromatic
Without hue: white, black and the grays between them.
