Black and white chalk with stumping on blue paper, 25.5 × 26 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

A study for the hem of a gown falling over a chair: white is kept for the ridges, black for the deepest folds, and the bare paper shows between.

  • Stumping, or rubbing the chalk to blend it, gives what the Met calls "a velvety yet radiant quality".
