Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres
Odalisque in Grisaille
about 1824–34
Oil on canvas, 83.2 × 109.2 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York
An unfinished, reduced repeat of his Grande Odalisque of 1814, with the form modeled almost entirely in grays.
- The Met notes grisailles often guided engravers making black-and-white prints; this one's purpose is uncertain, and it may have served his teaching studio.
- A faint blush of color shows on her back and right ear.
