Analogous

An analogous scheme uses hues that sit side by side on the color wheel, usually three to five neighbors.

Neighbors share a parent color, so they read as one family and feel harmonious with little effort. The risk is sameness, which painters offset with changes of light, dark and intensity inside the family.

  • Look for a picture that stays on one side of the wheel: all cool, or all warm.
  • Stretch the arc too far and the family breaks apart into colors that contrast.
