River with a Distant Tower

1865

Oil on canvas, 54.6 × 78.4 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Gray-greens in the trees and a pale, dull river and sky take up nearly all of the canvas. Specks of red mark the boatman's cap and a child at the left.

  • Red sits opposite green on the painter's wheel, so these small accents gain force from the field around them.
  • The red covers only a sliver of the surface, yet the eye can move between these few points.
  • Around them the picture stays low in saturation, which leaves the reds unchallenged.
