I Saw It (Yo lo vi)

1810, published 1863

Etching, drypoint and burin; plate 15.8 × 23.5 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Townspeople stream away from a hilltop town while a woman hauls a small child along by the arm. Whatever they are fleeing lies outside the frame.

  • Tomlinson (Berkeley) notes that the 1863 edition followed the order of the Ceán Bermúdez album of 85 proofs, now in the British Museum.
  • Look at the two men at left racing ahead, one clutching a bundle, while women and children follow behind.
  • Fine lines alone build the figures; the pale sky and hillside are left almost bare.
  • The caption claims eyewitness authority. Tomlinson (Yale University Art Gallery talk, 2016) thinks the artist probably imagined most scenes, though he did see the Madrid famine of 1811–12.
  • Entered the Met in the same 1951 gift as plate 15.
