Camille Pissarro

White Frost

1873

Oil on canvas, 25 3/4 × 36 3/4 in. Musée d'Orsay, Paris

Camille Pissarro (French, 1830–1903). Look at the long tree shadows on the frosty field: they are blue, not brown or black.

Look at

  • The sunlit ground between the shadows is warm orange and tan.
  • Warm light next to cool shadow makes the field look cold and bright.
  • Small, thick dabs cover the furrows, giving the whole field an even texture.

  • Shown at the 1874 exhibition.
