Claude Monet
Boulevard des Capucines
1873–74
Oil on canvas, 31 1/2 × 23 3/4 in. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City
Look down at the crowd: Monet paints each person with one or two strokes.
Look at
- The street tilts up, so the pavement fills the lower half.
- The bare trees are a haze of thin gray-violet strokes.
- A cluster of pink balloons at the right is the brightest spot of warm color in a cool picture.
- Monet painted this view twice; the version shown in 1874 was probably the other one.
