The Battle of San Romano

probably about 1438–40

Egg tempera with some oil on poplar, 182 × 320 cm. The National Gallery, London

The hedge behind the horsemen was green. The museum's record says it has darkened to almost black.

  • The rose leaves mix verdigris with lead-tin yellow under a copper-green glaze, and those glazes have darkened.
  • Later additions at the corners use a different copper green, artificial malachite.
