Pigments and Materials

A short course on painters' pigments and materials.

What paintings are made of: the pigments painters used and where they came from, the binders that turn powder into paint, the panels, canvases and grounds underneath, and how all of it changes over time. Concept pages explain one idea with a historic plate or an original diagram; example pages show it in a public-domain work.
