Vincent van Gogh
The Bedroom
1889
Oil on canvas, 73.6 × 92.3 cm. Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago
Researchers suspect the walls and doors, now light blue (cobalt blue with zinc white), were once violet, and that the red in the mix has faded.
- Dark red lake particles turned up in the door paint.
- The floor contains geranium lake, a red that has probably faded.
- In the Amsterdam version, a strip under tape since 1931 keeps a peachier floor, and one stroke hidden by the frame is still lilac (Hendriks and colleagues, 2011).
