Working With Each
Titian
Venus with a Mirror
c. 1555
Oil on canvas, 124.5 × 105.5 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington
Under this goddess lies another painting: a portrait of a man and a woman, turned on its side.
- X-rays show the double portrait; in the scholar Shapley's view, it was abandoned only shortly before the canvas was reused.
- The man's jacket was left showing and became the red velvet drape over her hip.
- Her elbow, her fingers and a cupid's legs were changed too.
