Three stages of acrylic drying: droplets float in water, then the water leaves and the droplets pack together, then they fuse into a continuous film.

Acrylic Dries

Acrylic dries by losing water, not by reacting with air.

The surface dries fast, but the film keeps losing water for about a month and can take up to a year to fully fuse.

  • For about a week, sometimes longer, freshly dried paint can still dissolve in water.
  • Even fully dry, it can swell in water and lose some additives.
  • Dried too cold, the droplets fuse poorly, leaving a porous or powdery film.
