Because acrylic sets quickly into a film, each flat block of color could be laid over the last without a long wait.

Look where colors meet: the yellow tree against the red, the lit windows against the dark wall.
None of the color beneath has smeared into the new layer.
Brush marks show inside the red and yellow, yet each block still reads as one color.
