The Drawbridge, from the Carceri

published 1750/1758

Etching, engraving and scratching, first state. National Gallery of Art, Washington

An imaginary prison of bridges, spiral stairs, towers and arches: architecture grown into a vast space no eye could measure.

Look at

  • Lines run in every direction, so ropes, beams and stairs cross each other and no single vanishing point holds the space together.
  • Dark, dense hatching on the near beams and piers against paler, open lines further back pushes the depth out.
  • The figures are tiny, a few quick strokes each, which turns the architecture into the giant.

  • Here in the first of six states (Robison 33), from the Carceri, or Imaginary Prisons.
  • One of thirteen Carceri plates Rosenwald acquired from William H. Schab in 1946 and gave the same year.
