Utagawa Hiroshige

Plum Garden at Kameido

1857

Color woodblock print, 36 × 24.4 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago

A dark plum trunk sprawls across the foreground: Edo's most famous tree, said to resemble a sleeping dragon.

  • Van Gogh copied the design in 1887; see Post-Impressionism.
  • Comparing many impressions, British Museum scientist Capucine Korenberg found the blocks changed over time.
  • Its surprising color, above all the red sky, makes it easy to recognize.
