Hara: Mount Fuji in the Morning

c. 1833–34

Woodblock print, 24.1 × 35.9 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

Two women and a porter halt on the road, apparently struck by the view.

  • The name Hara means “field”; from here the view of Fuji was almost unbroken.
  • This edition is often called the First or Great Tōkaidō.
  • The summit pushes past the top border, too big for its frame.
