Evening on the Chikugo River

1927

Woodblock print; ink and color on paper, 27.6 × 41.1 cm. The Cleveland Museum of Art

Lamplit houses line the river at dusk as a long bridge fades into the blue distance.

  • The Japanese title names the town, Hita, which the English leaves out.
  • The artist gave this impression to the museum himself, within a few years.
  • A seal reads jizuri, “self-printed”; Edo designers had left printing to specialists.
