Berthe Morisot

Summer's Day

c. 1879

Oil on canvas, 18 × 29 1/2 in. The National Gallery, London

Look at the speed of the strokes, from the zigzags on the dress to the flicks on the water.

Look at

  • Zigzag strokes run down the dress of the woman at the left.
  • On the water, quick flicks of paint run mostly side to side.
  • The far shore sits near the top edge, so water fills most of the picture.
  • The two women are cut off at the left and bottom edges.

  • Very likely shown in 1880 as The Lake in the Bois de Boulogne, a park in Paris.
