Stacks of Wheat (End of Summer)

1890–91

Oil on canvas, 23 1/2 × 39 1/2 in. The Art Institute of Chicago

Look at the color of the light: this is one of a series, a group of pictures of one subject, painted in different seasons and light.

Look at

  • Low sun turns the edges of the stacks orange and pink.
  • The sky is pale yellow near the hills and pale green-blue above.
  • The same pinks, blues and greens are mixed through land, sky and stacks.
  • Thick strokes cover the whole surface; in the sky they all slant the same way.

  • Fifteen of the stack paintings hung together in one room at a Paris gallery in May 1891.
