Bronze God from Cape Artemision

Greece to Paris, 530 BCE–1890

Bronze God from Cape Artemision

about 460 BCE

Bronze, 82 1/4 in. high. National Archaeological Museum, Athens

Look at the pose: the whole body is one wide stance, arms stretched out to balance a throw that is about to happen.

Look at

  • The arms reach almost the figure's full height side to side, so the statue is as wide as it is tall.
  • Both feet are planted wide, one leg bent and one straight, a stride caught mid-step.
  • Chest and stomach are modelled as broad, firm planes, with no strain in the face.
  • The beard is a mass of tight curls and the hair a flat braid, the only fine detail on a plain body.

  • Nothing is in either hand, so it is read as Zeus with a thunderbolt or Poseidon with a trident. It was pulled from the sea off Euboea.
