Caravaggio

Bacchus

about 1598

Oil on canvas, 37 1/2 × 33 1/2 in. Uffizi Gallery, Florence

Caravaggio (Italian, 1571–1610). Look at the light: one source from the upper left falls on skin, cloth and fruit, and the wall behind drops away into brown.

Look at

  • The bare shoulder at left is the brightest patch in the picture, and the face is turned so its shaded side falls away from it.
  • The white drapery is modelled in big folds with hard lights and deep creases, like carved marble.
  • The fruit bowl is painted as closely as the face, with bruises and wormholes left in.
  • The wine glass is held out toward you, at the front edge of the picture.

  • A youth crowned with vine leaves as the wine god, offering a glass.
