The Painter's Colors
Vincent van Gogh
Sunflowers
1888
Oil on canvas, 92.1 × 73 cm. The National Gallery, London
The yellows and oranges are several grades of chrome yellow, from pale lemon to deep orange. Soon after, in September 1888, he ordered three grades of it by letter.
- Chrome yellow is lead chromate; small changes in its chemistry gave the different shades.
- It can darken in light; see Fading and Darkening.
