The Painter's Colors
Rembrandt van Rijn
Self-Portrait
1659
Oil on canvas, 84.5 × 66 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington
Almost everything here is earth: red, yellow and brown ochres, with lead white, carbon black and tiny traces of vermilion.
- Scientists at the National Gallery of Art identified the ochres area by area: flesh, collar, hatband and background (2014).
- Umber, the browner earth, shows at the edge of the collar.
