The Painter's Colors

Édouard Manet

Music in the Tuileries Gardens

1862

Oil on canvas, 76.2 × 118.1 cm. The National Gallery, London

The crowd's top hats and coats are mostly ivory black, mixed with cobalt blue and orange-brown ochre.

  • The gray clothes mix the same black with cobalt blue, viridian and ochre.
  • Black even goes into the glazes of the foliage (see Color Theory, Glazing and Direct Painting), so it works as a color, not just for shadow.
