Rogier van der Weyden

The Magdalen Reading

about 1435

Oil on wood, transferred to mahogany, 62.2 × 54.4 cm. The National Gallery, London

Tests on this panel and four related ones found the paint is bound mostly in linseed oil.

  • Look at the lips, blended wet into wet, and the fur trim, where the brush dragged through paint that was still wet.
  • In one red glaze of the group, pine resin had been added to make the oil clearer.
