Portrait of a Lady

Paint and Its Surface

Rogier van der Weyden

Portrait of a Lady

about 1460

Oil on oak panel, 37 × 27 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington

The panel is a single oak board, and its tree rings can be dated.

  • Its 265 rings end in 1438. Adding the missing outer rings and time for the wood to season, the panel was probably not painted before about 1463, so it may be a few years later than its usual date.
  • The oak probably came from the Baltic region.
  • A bare margin around the paint shows it was painted with a frame already fixed to the panel.
