Working With Each
Claude Monet
Stacks of Wheat (End of Summer)
1890–91
Oil on canvas, 60 × 100.5 cm. The Art Institute of Chicago
Monet used both timings in one canvas: some passages worked wet, others painted over dry paint.
- Look at the edges of the large stack: paint built up wet-in-wet.
- In the sky, zigzag strokes were blended wet, then more color went on once they had dried.
- Some thick strokes look slightly flattened, possibly while still soft; the signature went on over dry paint.
