Working With Each
Leonardo da Vinci
Ginevra de' Benci
c. 1474/1478
Oil on panel, 38.1 × 37 cm. National Gallery of Art, Washington
Some of the blending here was done with fingers, not a brush.
- Where the sky meets the juniper bush, the paint was softened by hand; the National Gallery of Art notes his fingerprints still show.
- Oil dried more slowly than egg tempera and could go on in thin layers, the NGA adds.
- That let him paint the soft shading of the face and the distant haze.
