Two brush-rinse jars: solvent acrylic (Magna) thins with turpentine or mineral spirits, water-based acrylic thins with water. Once dry, Magna barely changes in water but dissolves in mineral spirits, while water-based acrylic may swell in water and changes little in mineral spirits.

Solvent Acrylic and Water Acrylic

Magna, the first artists' acrylic, had its plastic dissolved in solvent. Most acrylic sold today is water-based instead.

Magna thinned like oil but often dried in hours rather than days. Solvent or the next layer could dissolve it again.

  • It could even be mixed with oil paint.
  • It never sold well and was dropped in the mid-1970s.
