Chart comparing oil and acrylic: oil dries by taking in oxygen and is dry to the touch in about 2 days, thins with turpentine or mineral spirits, grows brittle with age, and yellows and cracks; acrylic dries as water leaves, is dry to the touch in minutes to a few hours, thins with water while wet, is flexible but brittle when cold, and yellows and cracks less but holds dirt.

Choosing Between Them

Neither paint is better; each suits a different way of working.

Choose by how you like to paint and where the work will live.

  • To blend and rework over days, pick oil.
  • To build crisp layers fast and clean up with water, pick acrylic.
  • To use both, keep thin acrylic underneath and oil on top, on an acrylic ground.
